Rob Smith is a trumpeter, educator, arranger, and composer based in El Paso, Texas. He has performed with orchestras and chamber ensembles throughout the United States, including the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, Pensacola Symphony Orchestra, Mobile Symphony Orchestra, Reno Philharmonic Orchestra, TOCCATA Lake Tahoe Symphony, Meridian Symphony Orchestra, and Mississippi Gulf Coast Symphony Orchestra. As a soloist, he has appeared with the University of Nevada, Reno Symphony Orchestra, University of Southern Mississippi Symphonic Winds, TOCCATA Lake Tahoe Symphony, Susanville Symphony Orchestra, and Meridian Symphony Orchestra.

Composer/Arranger

Sought after as a composer and arranger, Smith’s compositional debut, “Fairytale No. 1 - Arthur,” received the first prize in the 2023 University of Nevada, Reno Symphony Orchestra Composition Contest. His most recent chamber work, All It Takes Is a Spark for oboe, trumpet, and piano, will receive its world premiere at the 2026 International Double Reed Society Conference. Likewise, his arrangements for brass quintet and trumpet ensemble have been recorded by the Brass Forge Quintet and performed by the Southern Arts Brass Quintet and by various collegiate brass programs across the United States.

Educator

As an educator, Smith has taught students at the collegiate, secondary, and private levels. He has served as Graduate Teaching Assistant in the trumpet studio at the University of Southern Mississippi and as Instructor of High Brass at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. A frequent clinician and presenter, he has delivered masterclasses and lectures on brass pedagogy, arranging, audition preparation, performance practice, and chamber music arranging.

Dr. Robert Smith is a trumpeter, educator, arranger, composer, and scholar based in El Paso, Texas, whose work spans classical performance, chamber music, contemporary composition, and music education. Smith has built a multifaceted career distinguished by artistic versatility, collaborative musicianship, and a dedication to excellence in performance, education, and creative work.

As a performer, Smith has appeared with orchestras and ensembles throughout the United States, including the Mississippi Gulf Coast Symphony Orchestra, Meridian Symphony Orchestra, Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, Pensacola Symphony Orchestra, Reno Philharmonic Orchestra, TOCCATA Lake Tahoe Symphony, Susanville Symphony Orchestra, Carson City Symphony, Reno Jazz Orchestra, and Mobile Symphony Orchestra. Equally comfortable in orchestral, chamber, jazz, and commercial settings, he has established a reputation as a flexible and expressive musician.

Smith has appeared as a featured soloist with the University of Nevada, Reno Symphony Orchestra, University of Southern Mississippi Symphonic Winds, TOCCATA Lake Tahoe Symphony, Susanville Symphony Orchestra, and other collegiate and professional ensembles. His performances and presentations have been featured at the International Trumpet Guild Conference, Texas Music Educators Association Convention, Jazz Education Network Convention, Reno Jazz Festival, and numerous universities throughout the United States.

An active composer and arranger, Smith's music reflects influences ranging from traditional classical repertoire to contemporary popular styles, video game music, and cinematic storytelling. His orchestral work, Fairy Tale No. 1 - “Arthur,” won the 2023 University of Nevada, Reno Symphony Orchestra Composition Competition. Smith recently completed the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Trumpet Performance at the University of Southern Mississippi. His doctoral research explored the evolving artistic identities of the trumpet and cornet in late nineteenth-century France through the Légende contest pieces of Alexandre Georges, George Enescu, and Jules Mouquet. He also holds a Master of Music degree from the University of Nevada, Reno and a Bachelor of Music degree from Lamar University. His principal teachers and mentors include Dr. TJ Tesh, Dr. Josh Reed, Jonathan Bhatia, Kris Hammond, Dr. Nairam Simões, and Dr. Brian Shook.
